300 Participants at SMDM Spring Event "Preparedness for Pandemics”
The virtual European Spring Event of the Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM), with the general theme "Preparedness for Pandemics", was a great success. The program chairs of the event, UMIT TIROL scientists Dr. Beate Jahn, Dr. Silke Siebert and Dr. Uwe Siebert, as well as Dr. Tobias Kurth from Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, succeeded in attracting such renowned speakers for the event as the Director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Dr. Andrea Ammon, and the Special Envoy on Covid-19 for the World Health Organization and former UN Advisor, Dr. David Nabarro.
"The aim of the event was to engage with researchers, health workers, decision makers and other stakeholders from around the world on the important topic of preparedness in relation to pandemics. With over 300 registered participants from 43 countries around the globe, we thoroughly succeeded," said UMIT TIROL professor Dr. Beate Jahn, who is currently also Vice President of SMDM.
For the head of the UMIT TIROL Department of Public Health, Medical Decision Making and Health Technology Assessment, Dr. Uwe Siebert, the international exchange on the topic of pandemic preparedness was very enlightening. "We all learned a lot from each other at this meeting – not only how important it is for different regions and countries to join forces in joint pandemic preparedness and response, but also how necessary it is to analyze and explicitly communicate uncertainties and trade-offs," Siebert said. The keynote statements, interactive workshop on the topic, discussions and virtual exchanges during the event helped to establish new contacts in this interdisciplinary research field and create new global networks between researchers and decision makers for the future, Siebert concluded.

SMDM - 18th Biennial European Conference
Linking Research to Evidence-Based Action for Patients, Providers and Policy Decision Makers

We are delighted to report the conference dates are now confirmed for 29-31 May 2022 and it will be held at the Langenbeck-Virchow-Haus-Veranstaltungs in Berlin, Germany. This stunning, historic venue was built in 1913 to host medical conferences and educational events, and will be a perfect place to host our 2022 conference with the theme "Linking Research to Evidence-Based Action for Patients, Providers and Policy Decision Makers".
Later this year, we will be distributing a call for symposia; please begin thinking of compelling topics that can be considered. The call for abstracts and short courses will also be distributed later this year. Watch the website page for more information as it becomes available. We are looking forward to hosting in-person European Conferences again, and hope to see you in 2022.

Continuing Education Program on Health Technology Assessment and Decision Science (HTADS)
The international Continuing Education Program on HTADS is designed to provide excellent quality education and comprehensive training in the key issues of Health Technology Assessment and Decision Science for anyone involved in the health sector. Currently the HTADS Continuing Education Program comprises a Doctoral Program in Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and four certified courses.

Konferenz ”healthcare in europe – a safe haven? standard of care from a multidisciplinary perspective” findet starke nationale und internationale Resonanz
Europäische Gesundheitssysteme stehen vor vielfältigen Herausforderungen: Wirtschaftskrisen, steigende Gesundheitskosten, Migration oder bahnbrechende Fortschritte in der Biomedizin beeinflussen Versorgungsstandards.
Um diese Spannungsfelder auszuloten, organisierten Expert_Innen der UMIT, der Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck (LFU), der Medizinischen Universität Innsbruck (MUI) und des Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) am 26. und 27. September 2016 eine internationale Konferenz am Management Center Innsbruck unter dem Motto ”healthcare in europe - a save haven?“. Ein wichtiges Ziel war es dabei, unterschiedliche Perspektiven zu beleuchten und Fachdisziplinen wie Recht, Medizin, Gesundheitsmanagement und -ökonomie, Sozialwissenschaften u.a.m. in Dialog zu bringen.
Mit rund 160 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern aus 21 Nationen und 4 Kontinenten fand die Konferenz sowohl national als auch international starke Resonanz und wurde auch von zahlreichen Studierenden besucht. Das Programm umfasste 11 Sessions mit 42 Kurzbeiträgen und eine Poster Session. Die Abstracts können im Konferenzband (erschienen bei innsbruck university press) nachgelesen werden. Umrahmt wurde dieses Programm durch drei Keynote Vorträge zu aktuellen Herausforderungen der Gesundheitsversorgung, ergänzt durch Fachkommentare aus einer jeweils anderen Perspektive.
Dr. Verena Stühlinger, LLM. und Ass.Prof. Dr. Magdalena Flatscher-Thöni waren als Expertinnen der UMIT für die Organisation und inhaltlichen Ausgestaltung der Konferenz zuständig. So sprach Prof.in Dr.in Ineta Ziemele (Richterin am litauischen Verfassungsgerichtshof, vormals Richterin am Europäischen Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte (2005-2015)) über den generellen Zugang zur Gesundheitsversorgung und Menschenrechte. Ihr Beitrag wurde von Ao. Univ. Prof. Dr. Engelbert Theurl (Institut für Finanzwissenschaft, LFU) aus gesundheitsökonomischer Sicht kommentiert.
Univ. Prof. Dr. Herbert Tilg, Direktor des Departments für Innere Medizin I, Medizinische Universität Innsbruck, stellte in seiner Keynote die internationale Initiative „Choosing wisely“ („Klug entscheiden“) vor, die darauf abzielt, diagnostische und therapeutische Maßnahmen in der medizinischen Versorgung zu identifizieren, die nicht fachgerecht zum Einsatz kommen, was zu Überbehandlung, aber auch zu mangelnder Behandlung führt. Dr. André den Exter, Jean Monnet Chair und Experte für Europäisches und Internationales Gesundheitsrecht der Universität Rotterdam, kommentierte diese medizinische Initiative aus rechtlicher Sicht.
Univ. Prof. Dr. Karl Søvig, Professor für Gesundheitsrecht an der Universität Bergen, Norwegen, schließlich sprach über den rechtlichen Zugang zu Gesundheitssystemen für Migrantinnen und Migranten in Europa, mit einem speziellen Fokus auf die nordischen Länder und wurde aus medizinischer Sicht und der Erfahrung vor Ort von Univ. Prof.in Dr.in Barbara Sperner-Unterweger (Stv. Direktorin des Departments für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie, Medizinische Universität Innsbruck) kommentiert.
Die Konferenz stand unter Schirmherrschaft der „European Association of Health Law“, sowie des Europäischen Zweigs des UNESCO Chair in Bioethics (Haifa) International Network und wurde finanziell seitens der Tiroler Landesregierung und des Erasmus+ Programms der Europäischen Union unterstützt.
